TV Debut

November 9, 2010 in England

So if you’ve read my last piece you’ll know I went to watch the Giuseley v Crawley Town game, well with the score 2-0 to Crawley, we move at half-time to a lovely spot behind the goal thinking that Crawley would be certain to score a couple more goals, get a nice view of them, and who knows we might get on TV.

Well it worked, after Sergio Torres goal to make it 5-0 to Crawley ITV’s camera’s zoom in and you get a clear view of yours truely.

If any more proof is needed, you may notice I am holding a camera, so that’s me taking this picture.

A good day overall, I know it’s really sad to be happy over being on TV but I just find it amusing, so I apologise for a little bit of self indulgence.

Giuseley AFC v Crawley Town – FA Cup 1st Round

November 8, 2010 in England

This Saturday saw gibfootballshow losing its virginity in two football areas, my first ever Non-League match and also my first ever FA Cup match, what better way to lose my FA Cup cherry than watching local Blue Square North side Guiseley AFC take on the “Man City of Non-League” Crawley Town, riding high in the Blue Square Premier it was always going to be a tough ask for the home side.

A decent crowd turned up at Nethermoor Park, the capacity later revealed as 1,600 helped in part by the big away support and most likely a few people like myself were just there for the day out. With the minimum expectation just to see a decent match and be entertained an increased ticket price of £12 didn’t seem too steep.

Sheffield United v Coventry City – GFS on Tour #1

November 6, 2010 in England

Recently I was given my freedom; no longer do I have to answer to “da man” on a Saturday and it feels like I have been given a lease of life. So where would I rather spend my first Saturday of freedom, why of course Sheffield and the fabulous Bramall Lane.

Aidy Boothroyd’s Coventry City were the visitors and on a good run of form they were expected to fair well against Gary Speed’s United side. The Blades coming off the embarrassing 2-0 defeat away at Doncaster, not the score line but the manor of the performance and it was live on the BBC not the time you want to get truly outplayed. Coventry apart from the defeat against Cardiff had gone 4 games unbeaten.

Up and Coming – Davide Somma

November 2, 2010 in England

Davide Who? A Question all Leeds United fans asked themselves when the South African striker was given a trial during the summer of 2009. It began a search scrolling through Google looking for reports or YouTube clips of who Davide Somma was or even a short clip to see him play. Somma remained a mystery as most searches returned limited results.

Born in Johannesburg, he moved to America at the age of 12 and began his football career with college team Tyler Apaches. After a short time in the States he moved to Spain to join the youth set up at Regional side UD Logrones, the red tape was quickly cut through as he help Dual-Nationality with an Italian passport his dream of playing European Football was a step closer.

That passport came to great use when in 2004 he signed for Italian club Perugia. Perugia at the time had ambitions to dominate Serie A and made some extraordinary signings including Jay Bothroyd. Davide never got a game in his first year at Perugia and was quickly released.

Up and Coming – Valentin Stocker

November 1, 2010 in Champions League

This article was originally publish on twofootedtackle.com but also wanted to feature it on my own site.

At the age of 21, Valentin Stocker is a name unknown to most people outside of Switzerland. The Swiss Super League is not one of the more glamorous divisions so it is no surprise that the waves Valentin is making at FC Basel haven’t reach our rubbish-strewn shores as of yet.

Two goals against Wales in the recent European Championship Qualifiers may have raised an eyebrow or two. The goals themselves were not blockbusters worthy of mention on TV round-up shows, but showed Stocker continuing to do what he has done all season: playing from the left of midfield he has acquired a knack of being in the right place at the right time.
