The SPL is rubbish

December 12, 2010 in Scotland

The quality of the SPL gets questions time and time again. And of course it’s not La Liga or the EPL but it has it’s moments.

It doesn’t help when big mouth idiots like Robbie Savage come out with derogatory statements. Saying that Joe Ledley is too good for the SPL is just a ridiculous statement. A player that has played average at best, and has not set the country alight is in no way “too good” for the league.

No one is saying the SPL is the greatest league in the world, but it is nowhere near the worst, luckily every so often you get a moment of brilliance that makes you smile and happy that you watch the SPL.

Thank You Jonny Hayes!

Episode 17 – Benchwarming with Joe Cole

December 9, 2010 in Podcast

Another week another podcast, this week I was joined by Ethan Dean-Richards, Brent Atema and Charlie Anderson. We discussed the situation at Newcastle United, is Alan Pardew the man for the job, or is Mike Ashley just a tool.

We round up this week’s Champions League action, Charlie tries to contain his excitement over Copenhagen’s place in the Last 16, then in Part two we discuss the best and worse transfers througout Europe this season.

Another amusing and enjoyable podcast.

Don’t forget the podcast was nominate for Best Podcast at the NOPA Awards, and you can still buy tickets to the football blogging extravaganza and you could meet Barry Glendenning from The Guardian’s Football Weekly, ITV Commentary Clive Tyldesley and of course me. Give a click to either button and join in.

Harry…I’m Sorry!

December 9, 2010 in Champions League, England

I would like to think that when I’m wrong; I’ll say I’m wrong. And when it comes to Harry Redknapp and Tottenham’s Champions League campaign….I was wrong.

Now I am not saying I now preach at the church of Redknapp but I admire what he has done in the tournament so far. How many people had Spurs down to win their group? I know I didn’t!

Tangerine Dream

December 6, 2010 in England

Blackpool fan Norman Ralph takes a look at Blackpool’s season so far and what they have up their sleeve for the second half of this already exciting season back in the top flight.

When I wrote a post on my own blog about Blackpool winning the English Championship play-off final with the title “Blackpool for the Champions League”, I was writing somewhat tongue in cheek, I could not have imagined that they would actually go out and perform the way they have done. The English Premier League season is nearly half way through and Blackpool lie in 12th place on 19 points. They are not going to qualify for a Champions League spot from here, but it is highly likely they will avoid relegation which is a major feat in itself as they were by some margin the bookie’s favourite to go down at the start of the season (average price around 2/7).

Samir Nasri – Coming of age

December 5, 2010 in England, France

When Samir Nasri moved from Marseille to Arsenal people knowing that I had a penchant for Ligue 1 and all things French came to me asking how good he was, obviously following his time at Marseille I had only good things to say about Samir.

His partnership with Ribery was fantastic, he wasn’t a goal scorer and he didn’t really get many direct assists but anyone that had watched Marseille for the three years he was in the team could see that Nasri was a quality player.

His first season at the Emirates went relatively well six goals a couple of assists the people that I had given my guarantee of quality were pretty pleased with the Frenchman, the difficult second season followed, five assists but only two goals and it seemed questions were being asked.

Awards Time!

December 4, 2010 in Site Info

The year is coming to an end and various websites are running votes to find the best people in their specific field. Already I am delighted to be nominated for best podcast from the great guys at picklive and now somehow I’ve managed to receive another nomination.

The wonderful website Scotzine are running an award for the best “Scottish” themed football website. I am honoured to be put forward, even more so when my site is not geared around Scottish football, but it seems my work for STV and World Football Columns has led to my nomination.

So if you would like to vote for me in the award I would be very grateful but of course a vote for anyone in the running would be a good thing. Personally I voted for Scott at thefootyblog.net

Click the link, make your choice, and if you vote for me, I am very grateful.

Eden Hazard: Ligue 1 – 20 for 20

December 2, 2010 in France, Ligue 1 - 20 for 20

This is the start of a new series called Ligue 1 – 20 for 20 it will put 20 talented Ligue 1 players into the spotlight, one from each club. And I couldn’t think of a better way to start it all off.

If you’re looking for a goal scorer this is not your man. If it’s a player to take the game by the scruff of the neck, charge at defenders with pace and purpose making them look like rabbits in the headlights, dazzling skills and penetrating passes then look no further than Lille’s number 26, the Belgian wonderkid – Eden Hazard.

Ligue 1’s Young Player of the Year for two years running, Eden is a superb talent most people reading will surely heard his name, but perhaps you’ve not have had the delight of watching him play. After a relatively slow start to the season, the ever increasing form of Monsieur Hazard has catapulted Les Dogues up the league table, last week after a 2-1 win over Monaco saw them sit in Pole Position.
