Tonight was a very emotional night in Lille. The Champions managed to see off Rennes 3-2 – Moussa Sow with his third hat-trick of the season which saw the Senegalese striker pick up the Trophee du Meilleur Buteur for Ligue 1’s top scorer. Near the end of the game midfielder Yohan Cabaye was replaced by Stephane Dumont. This wasn’t due to a bad performance or a tactical decision it was a chance for Cabaye to say his goodbyes.

For the 2011/12 season a group of likeminded bloggers are getting together to blog about the excellent and exciting Europa League. Please follow @EuropaLegion for all the latest posts and info. There will not be a new site, just lots of posts on some excellent websites. Here goes my first contribution.

The same day that Liverpool and Spurs locked horns to see who could disrespect the Europa League more. There was disappointed for a few teams in the Eredivisie. Heracles last day win secured their place in the Europa League play-offs meaning FC Utrecht missed out on the chance of European football.

FC Groningen’s failure to beat PSV at the Euroborg meant they couldn’t catch AZ Alkmaar for the last automatic spot. What’s this you say! Teams battling at the end of the season to PLAY in the Europa League. Madness!

Craven Cottage played hosted to the 2011 UEFA Women’s Champions League final and Ryan Keaney was there to witness Lyon win their first European title.

Olympique Lyonnais exacted revenge on FFC Turbine Potsdam to win the 2011 UEFA Women’s Champions League with goals from Wendie Renard and substitute Lara Dickenmann coming in each half. The two clubs had faced off for the trophy twelve months ago and on that occasion, Potsdam lifted the trophy after a tense 120 minutes and an even twitchier penalty shoot-out.

On this week’s podcast we picked our goals of the season, the one and only Brent Atema describes our choices.

Eran Zehavi earned a special place in the hearts of football fans with this amazing overhead goal against Lyon in a December Champions League match. Not only did this goal help Hapoel Tel-Aviv earn a spot in the Europa League, it earned the Goal Of The Year nomination from Brazilian football expert Jack Lang.  While Jack admits to knowing nothing about Zehavi, he will always think of this goal whenever he hears that name mentioned.

Yesterday, in South-West Paris, Lille secured their first Ligue 1 Championship since 1954.  James Davenport our man in Paris was there to tell us the tale from the Parc des Princes

The match was an important game for both teams; Lille needed just a point to secure top spot in the League and Paris Saint-Germain were fighting for a place in next seasons Champions League. The stage was set for an entertaining and attacking game and it certainly did not disappoint.

Making his gibfootballshow debut is Ed Malyon – he brings us the story of the Argentine club bucking the trend in Argentina.

In Argentine football, where seemingly the only consistency is inconsistency, el Fortín, from the Buenos Aires suburb of Liniers, buck this trend and find themselves within reach of double glory.

“There’s not much health and safety in there but they’re certainly enjoying themselves” observed the commentator as he watched the mass of Velez hinchas jumping up and down as one and letting off fireworks into the Buenos Aires sky. And whilst the flagrant disregard for their own wellbeing and (quite literally) explosive support – as they completed their 2-0 victory over Banfield – was typical of the Argentine football fan, there is very little that is typically Argentine about this club.
