5 Players Who Won a World Cup Without Stepping on the Grass

The GIb Football Show represents the five rare players who won the dream World Cub without stepping on the grass.

  • Franco Baresi – Spain 82

Barezi was the 22-year-old that time and Italy boss Enzo Bearzot had left the future Milan Captain and legend without a single appearance in Spain. Until 1992 Barezi earned 82 caps in national team and scored 3 goals.

  • Daniel Passarella – Mexico 1986.

Passarella was Fiorentina defender that time, the 33-year-old veteran wasn’t a first choice of manager Carlos Bilardo. Argentine beat West Germany 3-2 thanks to Jorge Burruchaga’s winner.

  • Ronaldo – USA 94.

Arguably one of the best finishers in modern football, Ronaldo was 17-year-old Cruzeiro player and manager  Carlos Alberto Parreira didn’t give a chance to youngster. Brazil won the WC in penalties against Italy.

  • Raul Albiol – South Africa 2010.

Real Madrid centre-back failed to make an impact in competition with Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique. La Roja won is overtime against Netherlands.

  • Matthias Ginter – Brazil 2014.

Matthias Ginter

The 20-year-old SC Freiburg midfielder couldn’t help his team, as Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mesut Özil and Toni Kroos were the main power of Joachim Löw’s ‘German machine.’  Argentine lost in extra-time and Die Mannschaft became the first European nation had won the World Cup in the Americas.

Gibfootballshow is a football website founded by myself…Andrew Gibney. The site started in October 2009 to a very small audience, then during the 2010 World Cup and the great twitter boom of 2010 things started to pick up pace. There is no real agenda to the site, would like to think it covers a wide range of subject and talking points
