According to the Portuguese paper Record, Manchester United are in negotiations with Benfica over the signing of Renato Sanches. The 18-year-old has been catching the eye of everyone with his performances this season, especially in the UEFA Champions League in February where he earned himself a place in the Team of the Week for how well he played against Zenit St. Petersburg. It’s believed that United sent scouts to Portugal to watch Sanches against Belgium on Tuesday night once again, as they previously scouted the midfielder when he played against Sporting Lisbon in March.

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona are also among those interested but Benfica are thought to want at least €60 million (£47 million) with a substantial upfront payment in the region of £30 million.

  • Sanches is a very promising young talent, but considering the fact that the Old Trafford club will need to make an immediate return to the Champions League, he could be too young and inexperienced.
  • He has a £62.5m (€80m) release clause, even if the reports are to believed and Sanches could be sold for £47m, making any move to Manchester for that sort of fee very unlikely.
  • Benfica manager Rui Vitoria is relaxed about the possibility of any club coming in for Renato, that basically means the Eagles have included Sanches in their long-term plans.

Considering these facts, Gib Football Show concludes that the rumours claiming ‘Man Utd Set to Splash out the Second Largest Transfer Fee in Their History’ are ‘mostly false’.mostly falce

Gibfootballshow is a football website founded by myself…Andrew Gibney. The site started in October 2009 to a very small audience, then during the 2010 World Cup and the great twitter boom of 2010 things started to pick up pace. There is no real agenda to the site, would like to think it covers a wide range of subject and talking points
