Under 12 months ago, the name of Vincent Janssen was a relative unknown. Now he is a Dutch international, has scored at Wembley on only his second international appearance, now the AZ Alkmaar forward is being linked with the man to replace Romelu Lukaku at Everton this summer.
Last season the striker was playing for Almere City, but 19 goals in the second division sparked the move to the Eredivisie and now the 21-year-old has scored 20 goals in 29 games, showing that he could make the step up to the next level.
Now, with the Merseyside club trying to sound out possible replacements if the Belgian striker moves away this summer, Janssen, according to Elf Voetbal, has been touted as a potential signing. Scouts from the Toffees, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are all reported to have watched Janssen in AZ’s 4-2 defeat to PSV Eindhoven at the weekend.
Although he failed to score, he still caught the eye as he tried to help AZ fight their way back into the game. Janssen scored his country’s winner in Wembley on Tuesday, coming off the bench to score a second half penalty, showing great composure and maturity to stay calm on such a huge stage.
That would have given him a small taste of English football and the Eredivisie’s top scorer may want to see more. It is always a risk to move after just one season of top flight football and the youngster may want to extend his career in his homeland before making his next big move.
