I have spent my afternoon watching the first half of the Total Larsson DVD. If it isn’t obvious it’s a DVD that shows you nearly every goal Henrik Larsson scored for Helsingborg, Feyenoord, Celtic, Barcelona and Manchester United. It is an absolute pleasure to watch the man in his prime.

Something occurred to me while enjoying some of his best goals and I feel very very lucky. Although I had already been to Celtic Park on many an occasion I finally purchased my first season ticket in the same season that for a measly £650,000 Celtic secured the signature of Henrik Larsson from Dutch giants Feyenoord.

Some great goals in the Premier League this weekend, Cahill finding space between two Man United defenders to start his teams comeback, then Michael Essien scored two headers against West Ham, then while already inspired and doing research for this article Stewart Downing pops up with an exsquite diving header against Stoke as if it was meant to be.

Looking through some videos of the best headers of all time, one player’s name kept reappearing a player that has been close to my heart and provided some of the best football memories in my lifetime, shortly you will see some of my favourite headed goals, however it was only right to pay a short homage to one of the best players ever to head a football.

Ruud Gullit v USSR – 1988 European Championships
There are better headed goals out there a combination of the team, player, the strip and the way his hair seems to power the ball into the net makes this a magical goal for me.

Chris Sutton v Ajax – Champions League Qualifer

Little did Celtic fans know that the 3-1 victory at the Amsterdam ArenA would be their last away victory in a Champions League game for a ver very long time, a great patient build up with a thunderous headed finish

Martin Palermo v Velez Sarsfield

Palermo has always been dangerous with his head but never before from 40 yards, a great instinctive header and the power to guide the ball into the net

Lionel Messi v Manchester United – Champions League Final

Not known at all for his ability in the air, there was a surprised cheer around the world when Messi guided a superb header past the helpless van der Sar and put the finishing touch to Barcelona’s winning performance.

Jared Borgetti v Italy – World Cup Korea/Japan 2002

One of the greatest headers of all time, a difficult cross to apply any sort of volley Borgetti facing the wrong way manages to direct the ball to the back post, Buffon was left rooted to the spot.

Yordan Letchkov v Germany – World Cup USA 1994

Germany were looking strong to go all the way in 94 that was until they came up against the surprise of the tournament Bulgaria and it was this diving header that finished off the Germans and saw Stoitchkov’s team catapulted to worldwide recognition.

There are plenty of headers not on this list but please feel free to add them in the comments.
